Say what you will about Travs CEO Bill Valentine, but he's right about the bullpen, and I see nothing wrong with him making colorful comments like that on the radio broadcast. For one thing, it makes for good radio, and for another thing, that's exactly the kind of insight listeners want from the color man who happens to double as team owner or whatever it is he does exactly.
In addition, I have to continue to question the sanity of the relievers quoted in the paper and the players who have posted on this web site. In both cases, there is this continued assertion that the bullpen is good. The bullpen has not been a success this season and has contributed to many of the team's woes. At least, however, the bullpen might be better than last year's complete disaster that the Los Angeles Angels organization handed us.
Another positive from Valentine's comments is that they draw interest to the team among those sports fans reading the paper every day who never attend a game. This may be the absolute best publicity the Travelers have gotten all year. It's also good for drawing attention to the already stellar radio broadcast of the games. Travs fans who never consider listening to Jammin' Oldies 101.1 should because Phil Elson is great and Valentine just adds even more to it.
It's too bad there are only nine games left because I'd love to see this feud continue. If only we could coax Valentine out of the restaurant for a few minutes the next time Edwards enters the game so he could spell out "garbage" and heckle the pitchers. For that matter, I'd like to hear him heckle the manager the next time he sends Freddy Sandoval home for absolutely no reason and he is subsequently thrown out at the plate.
