Shelly! That lovable, uh.....what the hell is he anyway? A horse? A mule? A moose? The best mascot in the Texas League?....... I go for the latter.
What I'd like to see though, is more of his antics. I know that costume and giant head have to be heavy and hot. Is that why perhaps there seems to be a more spiritedly and (wink-wink) slimmer Shelly on the field now, than earlier in the summer?
Since the tops of the dugouts at Dickey-Stephens are big enough to land a small plane on, why not have Shelly skits on top of them involving the crowd, like Sandy the Sidewinder does at Tucson Electric Park in Arizona.
Why are there no "winners" who can frolic with Shelly doing other things besides the kid's race around the bases, which by the way last summer Travelerocity published the only known picture of Shelly actually winning a race.
"Dancing on the dugout," with Shelly would be great entertainment with our mascot leading the way. The guys who work the field could stand by for safety. Shelly could lead a rumba line on the dugout or down the aisle behind the box seats. Participants could be limited to names being drawn for the "dance line." There are all kinds of possibilities.
Fan interaction down on the field in between innings is great, but knocking over beer cans with a croquet mallet and ball gets old. No fan ever gets tired of the MASCOT!
And when Shelly gets tired there are other fun options on top of those huge dugouts. In Fayetteville at Baum Stadium a bunch of fun loving goofs dance, not too badly, and lead the crowd in classics like "YMCA." I think they are called the Foul Ball Guys. If that's not their name, it's a good one.
And there's also the RBI Girls! Wouldn't something like that be nice? (Dream on Lonesome Traveler, dream on.....)
Why have such good space completely go un-used? Or, I guess you could just forget it and put hats on top of the dugouts.
Speaking of concrete.......why do the tops of the dugouts have to be so stark? Let's paint the home side with Arkansas Travelers and the Dickey-Stephens logo on each side. Same for the visitors, except it could say Texas League.
Maybe some wise entrepreneur could sponsor such a venture. Or heck, some fans could go in together to pay for it and have their names painted down in the corner somewhere for example like....... Sponsored by~ Luther, Packey, and Pighead.
