Trav @ THE Center of Learning

I can not wait to hear Phil's calls of the games again! I'm glad the Travs got a deal a multi-year deal with a station that actually carries to Conway! As far as being on of the best sportscasters in AR, you are exactly right!
I hope everyone has appreciated the coverage he has brough the Travs.
Ain't it great baseball season has finally arrived!

Karch

Per the Travs website.......

The Travelers Executive Committee consists of six members all of whom have longstanding relationships with the franchise. Valentine is joined on the committee by Frank Thomas, Dr. Charles Logan, Ben Scroggin, Russ Meeks and team President Bert Parke.

Arky

I'd like to know how one obtains a share in the Travs. Everyone I ask doesn't seem to know how they obtained their interest in the Travs. Surely some of these shares are available.

You can't tell me that the board of directors were ALL around when the ARKANSAS TRAVELERS BASEBALL CLUB, INC, was created.

So, anyone?

Thanks,

Arky

Arky

According to the Secretary of State's website the Travelers' (or is it Travelers's?) Board of Directors consists of nine people:

BERT PARKE, President
BEN SCROGGIN, Secretary
BILL VALENTINE, Vice-President
FRANK THOMAS , Treasurer
NENA VALENTINE , Controller
PETE LAVEN , Controller
BERT BERKE , President
BILL VALENTINE , Vice-President
FRANK THOMAS , Secretary

Arky

Anyone else noticed that directions on the Travs website leads one to Ray Winder Field?

I hope nobody is relying on the Travs website for directions. Thankfully, I know the way.

Update:

The Secretary of State's website has some duplicates.

Instead of:

BERT PARKE, President
BEN SCROGGIN, Secretary
BILL VALENTINE, Vice-President
FRANK THOMAS , Treasurer
NENA VALENTINE , Controller
PETE LAVEN , Controller
BERT BERKE , President
BILL VALENTINE , Vice-President
FRANK THOMAS , Secretary

It lists two people twice. Bert Parke is listed as President and Bert Berke is listed as President. I think that's an error and a duplicate.

It also lists Bill Valentine on there twice.

Oh well.

Many years ago I inquired about buying shares in the Arkansas Travelers. The answer I got was that there were no shares for sale and that to acquire shares you would have to buy some from someone who already owned shares. Since there are no dividends, it's no wonder people who have the stock are not sure how they acquired it. I'm surprised they even know they own some. I think it was mainly a fundraising effort to bring baseball back to Little Rock, no real "stock option" proposal. Very limited number of "shares" out there and I suspect there are families who have shares who don't know it.

I was interested in just having a stock certificate I could frame even if it was one share. I already own stock that pays no dividends so what's a little more. Actually, I don't know for sure that "certificates" even exist.

Rackensacker

Maybe the Travs should have an IPO.

NationalOriole

Well, I see the Dem-Gaz is back to their same old shitty coverage of the Travs. I was hopeful with numerous articles the last few days that this season would be different. However, I open today's paper and what do I see - a front page story on Razorback baseball as well as one full page of Razorback baseball coverage. What do the Travs get? A little spot in the bottom right corner of the of the MLB section. Todd Traub is a fantastic writer who sadly is directed by editors who could give two flips. All right, now that I have got that off my chest, Nick Green pitched a hell of a game last night for six innings.

The Travelerocity reporter

Fayetteville's ABA team got as much coverage for its road games.

Voice of Reason

The coverage at the Democrat-Gazette all comes down to Wally Hall's hatred of baseball. It really is that simple. And Wally "yours truly" Hall really is that simple.

Mars

I've got a question. Why am I finding out from the newspaper, rather than an email from the Travs, that I have to GO TO THE PARK TO PICK UP MY SEASON TICKETS AND PARKING PASSES?

Mars

another question, why is this not mentioned on their website? SHouldn't they post that kind of information somewhere, rather than you know on page 9C of the Saturday paper? Who knows, maybe BV or Pete or David Kay will call me later today and tell me...

Come on Bill...you complain that people make petty complaints on this board. This is a legitimate complaint that should not be excused. Were you ONLY going to let people know about ticket pickup through the newspaper? That is shotty way of running a business

Maybe you guys ought to check the website again

Mars

maybe you should know that I checked it before the post and it wasn't up there. But thanks for checking in and contributing nothing

sure is up there now

Karch

And Phil mentioned a few times last night during his broadcast. Good grief.

Anyone notice that Brandon Wood hit a game winning homer for the Bees last night?

One interesting thing I read once about shares in the Arkansas Travelers... There is a limit to the number of shares one person can own. This insures that no one person can buy controlling interest in the ballclub.

Did anyone else notice that Brandon Wood was 0 for 8 with 5 strikeouts in his AAA career before the homerun?

Mars

well, I got my tix, so now I'm happy. See ya' on the 12th

Baseball Reader

You won't ever see adequate coverage of the Travs in the D-G as long as Wally is the sports editor. Wally loves eating on expense account, basketball, softball, and "Moms" in that order. But lay off Wally. For someone whose first language was Serbo-Croation, he does pretty well.

Voice of Reason

Well judging by his writing English obviously isn't Wally's first language.

I don't think Wally should be given a break for openly ignoring one of the most popular sports in America. It's not like he's ignoring volleyball or cricket. It's baseball and it deserves the attention of the sports editor of the largest newspaper in the state.

His ignorance of baseball and lack of any interest in putting it in his worthless columns is further proof that the columns he writes are not about sports. Wally's column is about the most important thing to Wally...namely himself.

It's an embarassment, he's an embarassment and that's all I have to say about that!

NationalOriole

OK Mr. Todd Traub...what did you drug Wally Hall with?! GREAT coverage in today's sports section about Dickey-Stephens and also the insert section! Great job!

As encouraged by the Trav website and Trav generated email messages, fans attending the opening game would be well advised to pick up their tickets in advance.
With many fans getting mini-season sets, it takes a few minutes for all the tickets to print, and no one wants to be stuck in a long line at the will call window on opening night.

The Trav staff is making an impressive effort to avoid the long lines -- opening the ticket office extended hours this week, including even open on Easter Sunday afternoon.

Walking through D-S again, one can't help but be excited about the first home stand in the new ballpark, even though the excitement is muted somewhat by the loss of RWF.

Turning RWF into something like Rickwood Field in Birmingham still seems like the best of both worlds for central Arkansas and baseball fans. The Rickwood Classic

http://www.barons.com/nm/publish/barons584.shtml

brings a lot of publicity and tourism dollars to Birmingham each year -- the same could easily be true for Ray Winder Field, if the elephant onslaught from the zoo encroachment can be avoided. Does no one in Little Rock has the vision and foresight to make it happen?

Why does the guy at the box office have to be such a prick..!?!

Picked up my tickets this morning and asked if I could get 2 for Thursday. Prick said Nope - Sold Out. I asked about the quote in the paper today from Pete saying that they likely wouldn't turn any one away. Prick's response: that's Pete's probem.

Nice. Real nice.

so you asked for 2 tickets to a game you already knew ahead of time was sold out... and you wonder why he might have been short with you... just saying...he may have even been thinking the same thing about you...I think most logical people realize they will turn away if they have too, but I could be wrong...just show back up Thursday and try again

Customer service at it's finest. Be short with those that contribute to the program.

That's the ticket.

How long have we known about the sell out? Is this new news? Where you surprised that you were told no to getting tickets> Are you really thinking that they will not turn anyone away? Just what was the quote in the paper? Quite your bitching. We knew to get our tickets a long time ago.

Mars

just to pile on a bit. But only an idiot asks for tickets to something that is sold out, and then gets bent out of shape when told "no". I don't care what the paper says. You know the game is sold out, you probably have known tickets have been available for a week or two. I don't see who you have to blame but yourself.
I bet ticket guy thought "who does this prick think he is? can't he read the sign that says 'sold out'"

NationalOriole

Lay off David...he is a hard working man with a generally great attitude. I am sure he is more than a little stressed and overworked right now in preparation for Thursday night.

Not "bent out of shape". Just thought I'd ask since the paper reported this morning that no one would be turned away.

It's just that the pissy attitude at the box office is not how to treat the general public, let alone season ticket holders.

All he had to do was just say politely "sorry, the Thursday game is sold out, can I sell you a ticket for Friday night..."

Customer service has NEVER been a strong suite with the Travs. Looks like the tradition continues.

Karch

I, for one, have always had great customer service by the Trav's staff. Always. I tend to think that all the folks that have sat around me for the past few years would agree...

Mars

by the way, congrats to Pete on his promotion. Talk about out of the frying pan and into the grand opening of a new park. Pete, I got your ibuprofen right here!

Trav Fan

Everyone should relax and pipe down. Missing opening night is not fun, but by the second homestand there will be plenty of tickets to Traveler games. The stadium seat 5,900 or 7,200 or whatever they're saying this week, and the Travs consistently draw 2,200 to their games. Do the simple math. And with parking likely to be a migraine, by midseason Bill Valentine will serve you a nice Kendall Jackson merlot along with your ticket.

Ernest T. Brezhnev

"I, for one, have always had great customer service by the Trav's staff. Always. I tend to think that all the folks that have sat around me for the past few years would agree..."

You must not have ever bought popcorn or peanuts from the grouchy unfriendly morons who sold those two items at RWF.

Ernest, since you are always displeased with everything about the Travelers and their staff, why don't you just stay at home? You and your other grouchy compadres on this blog should forget all about the Arkansas Travelers. Oh, I forgot, they are the North Little Rock Travelers, which really makes you pissed.
Better yet, you should buy the Arkansas Travelers and show what a great business man you are. I am positive that you could do a much better job than anyone who currently works for the Travelers.

Is it baseball season yet?

I agree with that last statement. I am also positive that you could do a better job Ernest!!!

How much for the buyout? I'll chip in $100

The Travelerocity reporter

I think people who keep suggesting attendance is going to have a heavy drop off based on past years at RWF are going to be in for a big surprise, and that includes whoever thought 5,200 fixed seats were a good idea.

Voice of Reason

5200 fixed seats is perfect for this ballpark. Just not for the first season...you don't built a ballpark for its first season. You build it for the years to come. 5200 fixed seats is right.

The Travelerocity reporter

I don't think so.

Karch

Time will tell. But I don't see how it will be a problem.

bill valentine

You will not find anyone better to deal with than our ticket manager David Kay..NO ONE HAS EVER COMPLAINED ABOUT HIM...but what would you expect on here...some jerk did come in yesterday and raise hell because he could not get tickets 72 before a game that has been sold out since April 2...just because the newspaper said no one would be turned away doesn't make it so..we never said that...we cut off ticket sales because we do not know what the park will really hold and we are trying to have some sort of an opening that will not crowd everyone...

Ernest T. Brezhnev

Is it too much to ask for non-surly employees at the concession stands? Ok, the people at the soft drink stands and the ticket windows at RWF were generaly friendly. I'll give DSP the benefit of the doubt until it's open and I've been to a few games. However, if I run into surly employees at DSP like the ones at the popcorn/peanut stand and hotdog stand at RWF, I won't apologize for any criticism of jerks. For what it's worth, I almost agree that the ticket guy just about had a right to be impatient with the moron who must have been on another planet when the first game had been sold out for days. And why are you singling me out? I'm not exactly the only person who has including criticism in my posts. Yeah, anything could go too far, but some people want to put blinders on if they see any criticism or cover their ears if they hear any. I'll be out there on opening night and will give the staff the benefit of the doubt because it's going to be a madhouse out there. Believe it or not, I'm looking forward to having a good time. Just don't blow your top and start a lynch mob if comments you don't like are posted in the future by me or anybody else.

Ernest T. Brezhnev

Just to clarify things, my post above on April 10 at 9:38 p.m. was not meant in reply to Bill, whose post immediately preceded mine. It was meant in reply for the posts with no name on April 10 at 12:57 a.m. and at 8:52 a.m., and the one from "Is it baseball season yet?" at 8:37 a.m. - the ones with the lynch mob mentality. I also re-read the first post and noticed that you said "You and your other grouchy compadres on this blog", so I realize now your comments weren't meant just for me. I'll still post what I want to post, but on that particular error, well,....My bad.

Great quote from Warren Stephens:

“Dickey-Stephens Park is the culmination of the vision and trust displayed by the voters of North Little Rock and a lot of hard work by many people in central Arkansas. The ballpark is also a tribute to the cities of Little Rock and North Little Rock coming together as one community. I have said this before, but I firmly believe that the river that has divided us can now become the river that joins us.”

Here here, Warren, here here.
